About the Director, Bruce Phelps


A 1970 graduate of Concordia College, Bruce taught at Luverne, MN for 5 years, Wayzata MN for 1 year and finished his 34 year teaching career at Anoka High School in Anoka, MN. Bruce earned his Masters Degree in 1978 from Bemidji State University.


Bruce has directed choirs at the  Luverne United Methodist Church, Anoka United Methodist Church, Zion Lutheran Church in Anoka, First United Methodist in Fargo, Grace United Methodist in Moorhead  Christ the King Lutheran Church in New Brighton, and is currently at Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Ramsey, MN.  He also directed the South St. Paul Male Chorus, the 3M Male Chorus, Great Plains Harmony in Fargo and founded the Two Rivers Chorale.  He is has served as a clinician at numerous choral festivals in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Alaska, and Virginia.  He was the director of the Minnesota All State Men’s Choir in 2005-2006.


Bruce was named the Outstanding Music Educator of Minnesota by the National Federation of State High School Associations in 1995. Bruce also received the Outstanding Music Educator Award from the Minnesota Music Education Association for the school year 1999-2000 for his outstanding efforts and leadership in the classroom and beyond. In 2009, Bruce was inducted into the Minnesota Music Educators Hall of Fame.  In the fall of 2017, Bruce was inducted into the Minnesota State High School League Hall of Fame and received the F. Melius Christiansen Lifetime Achievement award from ACDA of Minnesota.


Currently,  Bruce also serves as  the president elect of the FMC Endowment Fund Committee for American Choral Directors of Minnesota.  Bruce  enjoys the Twins and the Timberwolves, and occasionally chases a white ball around a large field.
